A two-day weekend workshop in Wilton, CT
Saturday May 30 and Sunday May 31, 2009
9 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day
The beauty of available light is that it's everywhere. Any time of day and any situation can be turned into a great opportunity for environmental portraits. This workshop will help develop your ability to "see" the quality of light and apply it to real people. We don't scout locations, we scout light and make the location work. To create our interpretive portraits using available light, we work with an understanding and awareness of how critical the direction as well as the quality of the light is to the subject.
We put our people in the light, critically aware of the direction as well as the quality, to create our interpretive portraits. The most important part of our photograph is not the subject, but rather how we choose to define our subject. The emphasis is on utilizing all
of our tools (light, tonality, composition, and color) to effectively communicate our ideas visually.
The workshop consists of demonstrations and shooting models. Shooting in a daylight studio, and also on location, you will work with all kinds of existing light: hard, soft, bounced, reflected, diffused, etc. The only photographic accessories we use are reflectors and diffusion panels. We will work with film or digital, in any format. You will learn how to communicate with a variety of personalities and how to draw out the appropriate expressions from your subjects. The goal is on capturing the essence of the people by the use of posing and props.
Digital is encouraged but any format is welcome. Participants must have their own laptop.
This workshop is for intermediate to advanced amateurs who want to strengthen their people skills as well as their appreciation and understanding of natural light. This is not a tech course. A working knowledge of photography is required for this course. Participants must provide the models with a CD of processed and edited images.
