STUDIO FUNDAMENTALS
One-week workshop
June 22 to 28, 2008
This lively workshop is geared to provide you with a solid foundation of how light works and how to take control with studio strobe and tungsten lights. Whether your subjects are people or products, you will learn how to manipulate the light, and the mood, to define your subject. Soft and warm or bold and graphic, natural or special effects, whatever lighting effect you want or need, this workshop will give you the tools to succeed. With lighting demonstrations and plenty of hands on shooting, this busy workshop will cover today's lighting styles with a variety of equipment. In addition to sharpening your skills with umbrellas, soft boxes and grids, you will become familiar with such light control devices as beauty dishes, snoots, and reflectors. Advanced techniques include dragging the shutter, mixing tungsten and strobes, effective camera shake, and color manipulation with gels and filters.
INTRO TO PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY
One-week workshop June 29 to July 5, 2008
This intensive workshop is for advanced amateurs and new professionals who want to work more creatively as portrait photographers. The course covers cameras and camera formats, including digital, lenses, films, and a variety of strobe equipment. Understanding lighting, both in the studio and on location is a crucial part of creating the desired effect. We cover lighting patterns, quality of light and lighting ratios. Learn to incorporate styling, composition and the photographer-subject-client relationships in your photographs. Discover new ways to set up a portrait and establish a comfortable rapport with subject, as you capture intimate and revealing moments and true character. We cover portraiture for commercial, retail portrait, editorial and corporate clients. Assignments this week include photographing your fellow students, local residents, and models. The emphasis throughout the class will be to develop each photographer's personal vision and style. Digital is encouraged but any format is welcome.
This workshop is for freelance photographers, advanced amateurs and emerging professionals who want to develop their skills in photographing people as they improve their portfolios. Students should have a good working understanding of their cameras and equipment.
